IsBank Museum
Interactive Screens

Clients: ISBANK BANKING MUSEUM
Role: USER INTERFACE, USER EXPERIENCE, USER RESEARCH
DELIVERED: ELEVEN INTERACTIVE KIOSKS AND TWELVE INTERACTIVE TABLETS

This project involves design and development of 11 interactive kiosks and 12 interactive tablets as well as a central content management system. This system also provides visitor usage data analytics.

IsBank museum is dedicated to telling the institutional history of IsBank, the largest private bank in Turkey. The collection displays objects, documents and multimedia materials that have been used since the Bank’s foundation. The museum had interactive kiosks already implemented in the museum, but the engagement was low. The museum was looking for a more intuitive, engaging digital experience that would improve the journey of the visitors.

Who are we designing for?

Inside the museum we talked to visitors and the employees of the museum to in order to find out about the visitor experience. We chose people from different age groups and we asked about their general experience of the Museum and the existing kiosks. We determined some points that might be affecting visitor engagement.

  • Conceptual orientation of the museum can be difficult to follow for the visitors.
  • Sometimes the visitors circulate not the way as intended.
  • Content can be overwhelming for some while some visitors would like to get more detailed content.
  • Existing kiosks are hard to read.
  • Kiosks do not draw the attention of the user.
  • Some users have resistance to use kiosks. Some visitors worry they would not be able to use them.

Types of visitors:

A deep understanding of the visitors is fundamental in creating usable, engaging and accessible designs. Identifying age, socio-economic backgrounds, motivations and digital literacy of the visitor allows us to recognize different types of visitors and their varying needs and expectations.

The research showed that most of the visitors fall into the following categories:

  • Retired employees of the Bank: IsBank is a huge bank over 25.000 of employees. The number of retired employees is much more. The institutional culture is very strong.
  • Professionals and hobbyists: Economists, historians, educators, collectors, museum professionals and people who are interested in the Bank’s history as a hobby.
  • Children: Schools organize educational tours to the Museum.
  • Cultural curious: Tourists and local people who are visiting the museum as a part of the city’s cultural experience.

UX criteria:

I determined a set of points and essential functions before I started preliminary designs.

  • Customization of font size to make it accessible to different age groups.
  • Majority of interaction should be consistent with what people expect.
  • Design style in accordance with the permanent exhibition design and style guide of the Museum.
  • Consistency and variation of use and visuals across different interactive screens.
  • Simple and easy to use.
  • Visually attractive homepage designs.
