AIRPORT KIOSKS
/ ISTANBUL
CLIENTS: TURKISH AIRLINES, “SAW” AND “IST” INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS
Role: USER RESEARCH, USER INTERFACE, USER EXPERIENCE
Delivered: INTERACTIVE KIOSK WITH 3 THEME ADAPTATIONS, 3D CASE MOCKUPS
This project involves design and development of 3 separately branded sets of interactive kiosks that provide personal wayfinding and check-in functions for two international airports.
I was commissioned this job by an agency that sought to propose new sets of visitor kiosks to Turkish Airlines as well as the two international airports of Istanbul at the time: Sabiha Gokcen and Istanbul Ataturk Airports.
Who are we designing for?
Existing devices were based on generations old hardware that some visitors found repelling. It was observed that these visitors who did not self check-in, would then cause extra workload on the staff.
When asked about existing devices, some visitors described them as “terminals”. Reviewing the information at hand I decided to aim for an approachable design that felt like using a modern touch based app but with clear focus on kiosk functions. It was observed that once engaged, the visitors would then expect to save time with these devices so speed was the value proposition.
Primary research revealed that wayfinding was another function we could provide and expect positive results in alleviating the workload of (human) staff. These were the main pain points and opportunities.

Design Solution:
I was asked for creative input in the preliminary design phase of the physical cases that would host the kiosks so I provided 3D case mock-ups to be reviewed and reinterpreted for daily use by an engineer.
These kiosks combine the functions of basic check-in kiosks with information kiosks and provide additional passenger-specific functions such as displaying the path to the correct boarding gate.
