About the Initiative

BlockPower is a transformative initiative focused on low-propensity voters, aiming to mobilize individuals and communities to participate actively in the voting process, to engage them in conversations about voting and increase voter turnout in the United States.

The platform consists of two key programs: the Voting Ambassador (VA) Program, which operates exclusively during election seasons, and the persistent Community Ambassador (CA) Program. Community Ambassadors may choose to become Voting Ambassadors during election seasons. Ambassadors are incentivized through stipends to bolster voter turnout.

During election seasons, individuals recruited by Voting Ambassadors are granted the status of “Vote Tripler.” They become a part of the VA system and are encouraged to onboard three more people to vote, referred to as “Triplees” or “Friends.” Triplees have the option to upgrade to Triplers once they check their own eligibility to vote and set up their own voting plan.

My Role & Challenges

As a UX/UI designer, my role was to create an intuitive and scalable design system that accommodated the needs of both the CA and VA programs, while aligning with BlockPower’s brand and the thematic requirements of U.S. elections.

The platform catered to a broad demographic, including those with limited digital literacy. It was crucial to design an experience that was accessible and intuitive for all users, regardless of their prior experience with technology. This was particularly challenging given the urgency of the platform’s mission and the complexity of the information presented.

Another challenge was to devise a system that was flexible enough to serve the distinct visual and functional demands of both programs while ensuring a seamless user experience.

The final challenge was to enable administrators to efficiently manage user statuses and roles within the platform.

Design Proposal

I implemented a comprehensive onboarding process for the diverse user base with varying levels of technological proficiency, which guided users through the platform’s features and functionalities. I designed the system to be universally accessible, prioritizing ease of use to accommodate users with a wide range of technological abilities.

Designing for the CA program required alignment with BlockPower’s corporate identity, while the VA program, including the Tripler and Triplee experiences, demanded a shift toward a U.S. election theme. To achieve this, I developed a versatile design system catering to both programs. Additionally, I established a set of design tokens for color and typography.

With future scalability and Atomic Design principles in mind, I defined a library of components with a wide range of adjustable settings. These components served as the fundamental building blocks of the user interface, encompassing elements such as buttons, navigation elements and more complex items like cards, forms, and modals.

By manipulating these adjustable settings within the design system, developers gained the capability to effortlessly create new and complex screens or adapt existing ones as BlockPower expanded its initiatives and added new features. This approach resulted in efficient and scalable implementation, preserving design fidelity and expediting the overall development process.

For the administrator panel, I designed a system streamlining status management, making it easy for administrators to grant and remove above mentioned statuses as needed, with intuitive controls and adjustable settings. Find the administrator panel design system at the bottom of this page.

Reflections

I worked closely with stakeholders throughout the project to understand their specific needs and preferences. Regular feedback sessions and collaborative design reviews helped align the design with BlockPower’s objectives.

This project solidified my belief in design as a tool for social change. I witnessed firsthand how thoughtful design could lower barriers to participation and empower individuals to take action within their communities. It also highlighted the importance of adaptability and foresight in design, particularly when creating systems that must evolve over time.

The impact of this project on voter mobilization underscores the vital role of UX/UI design in social innovation, and I welcome the opportunity to delve deeper into these discussions.
